database design - whatsapp-messenger group members, Why 256? -

previously whatsapp had group members limit of 100, increased 256. same case broadcast list.

why?

a single byte holds numbers 0 255. number larger 255 needs 2 or more bytes. 0 255 256 numbers, why put limit.
