git says "modified: XXX (modified content, untracked content)" -

i haven't seen particular twist, thought add question , answer benefit of others. have directory few subdirectories , wanted start tracking in git. did

git init git add * git commit

but when ran git status said, modified: licensechecks (modified content, untracked content) (where "licensechecks" subdirectory.

my question was, wait, how can be? mean? thought disk quota or corrupt file or something.

turns out problem licensechecks subdirectory git repository. enigmatic message git gave me bit of trouble. when removed licensechecks/.git, problem went away. of course, lost history licensechecks, don't care that, luckily.
